Tavcom in Mauritius

With its miles of palm-fringed sandy beaches and coral reefs, Mauritius is most people’s idea of paradise, however, as in all countries, the underlying requirement for security is always paramount. With 1½ million visitors to the island every year the security team, working for Airport Terminal Operations Ltd running Mauritius’s international airport is always kept busy.

Senior Technician ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) JamilKhan Oozeerkhan has just been awarded Tavcom’s Professional Practices of Security Network Design BTEC Level 5 Diploma, working at the airport since 2013.

JamilKhan is responsible for their CCTV, Access Control and Fire Alarm systems as well as all the other ultra-low-voltage systems at the airport.JamilKhan told us: “I perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and installation together with a team on the Airport’s CCTV, Access Control and Fire Alarm systems, the CCTV system Design Diploma is of great use to me because it is directly related to my work.

After completion of the course, I now have a deep understanding of CCTV systems in all its aspects, technically and legally. I can confidently undertake large CCTV projects starting from the initial survey, considering its legal parameters to include Surveillance Camera Code of Practice and Data Protection Act, identify lighting sources, and types of cameras (Day or Night), lenses specifications, mode of transmission, medium of transmission (cable or wireless), storage, control room design, footage retrieval and application of technology like ANPR.

The BTEC qualification is a prestigious award at international level and it is recognised by employers and is also the most recommended qualification to have. Tavcom is the best online BTEC courses provider I have known so far and I am very thankful to Mr Cliff Pester (my course tutor) and Mr Andrew Saywell who help me to achieve this precious diploma”
